WHEELBARROW DERBY
SATURDAY'S NOVEL EVENT . ONCE AGAIN THE LADIES Saturday next will be remarkable for the holding of a 'WheelbarroAV Derby' in the Strand in the further interests of the raising of funds for the Red Cross Appeal. The event will commence at 10 aan. from Brab ant's garage and already there are approximately thirty entries. The entire proceedings will be handled by a special committee and each barrow will be pushed by a lady. Each barrow will be decorated and loaded with goods of an approximate value of 255, all of which have been donated by tli2 businessmen of Whakatane. The course of the Derby will be via Com mcrce Street to the Strand. It vfill terminate at the Square, where the goods will be auctioned by Mr A| J. Canning for the benefit of the fund. The contents of the barrows embrace a wide variety of fooistufTs. Besides ordinary grocery lines we have learnt of pigs, sheep, coal and fowls. The variety seem,'; to be endless. The organisers wish to stress that the goods have been given free hyi the retail) shops and residents of Whakatane. In recognition of this therefore the public is asked to attend the auction anjd help toward the appeal by buying at ordinary prices whatever goods they may require. There arc no expenses, and all money realised will go to the Red Cross. • ;
