RACING NOTES
The Aga Khan's Yearlings. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Go. Ltd. have received advice tliat the Aga Khan is selling the whole of his yearling colts without reserve in England this month. They have already been named and represent a wonderful collection of the best blood in the world. Exit Royal Abb. The Posterity—Genesta gelding, Royal Abb, owned and raoed by Mr A. 11. Long, of North Auckland, and trained by R. S. Bagby, of Ellers-t lie, died last week. Early in the winter he promised to make his mark as a successful cross country candidate, but later became affected by ailments through which he coukl not undergo a thorough preparation, The National Weights. Handicaps for the Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase have duly made their appearance. They are based to a certain extent on the recent Trentham running, but it may again be found that a large percentage of the candidates AAiio failed to get through the puggy clay of Trentham often run in'much improved style on the firmer and clearer tracks at Riccarton. Yogi for N.Z. Cup. It had been intended by the Ormond stable at Hastings to send the Beau Pere colt, Yogi, to Australia for the spring campaign, but it has now been decided to give him a preparation in view of the NeAV Zealand Cup. Three months ago inquiries were made in respect to tlie possible purchase of Yogi, when it was duly initmated that ten thousand guineas would not. secure him. Grand National Hurdles. Although the winter season ha? well advanced the ranks of the hurdle brigade has not been very much strengthened by the inclusion of new aspirants for jumping honours. This fact may have led Mr E. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne, to nominate his horse De Friend, for the Grand National Hurdles to be run next month. This son of Defoe has won good races on the flat, and is a very capable jumper. If he is i»neluded in the acceptance list he'will be very strongly supported by Gis-« borne sportsmen. The Condition of Padishali. New Zealand's leading steeplechaser, Padishah, who ran third in the Wellington Steeplechase, of three miles, is reported to have bled dur-« ing the running, and finished in a very tired condition. That the trouble had not been fully assessed during the week was shown by his absence on the second and third day's of the meeting. It is stated that if the bleeding is of a serious nature Padishah's turf career is practically ended, but otherwise he will be taken down to Riccarton to continue his preparation for the Nationals., Staged a Comeback.. New Zealand's fine Beau Per? three year old colt, Beaulivre, cele-< bratcd the closing days of the 193940 season by Avinning on Saturday the Doomben Gup at Brisbane in brilliant time. He carried the top weight, 9.1, in a field of eighteen of Australia's leading handicap candidates. and AA'as ridden by the ex-NeAA' Zealand horseman M- McCarten. That lie was on th« day unmistakably much superior to his seventeen opponentr. av.'ss proved by the fact that he 'won by thr<i-i lengths wil.hr out being ridden out. The time for !he eleven furlongs, 2.14 3-. r >sec;s, was an Australia. - ) and New Zealand record . A Hard Luck Horse. Just before the of the Wellington meeting last week photo graphs appeared, in certain Metropolitan, dailies relative to Royal Star II being established the right to being termed a hard luck horse, as since his purchase by Mr J. B. Flet cher he has been started 25 times for one win, five seconds and four thirds, for prize money totalling £330. This information appears to have reached the English imported scion of a noble race, and evidently he decided to at least endeavour to change the title bestoAved upon him. And he certainly made good for he was A'ictorious at the AVellington meeting in both the Whyte Handicap and Winter Oaks, the stakes won totalling £900.
