LADY GALWAY'S APPEAL NEXT WEDNESDAY'S .DRIVE IN THE BOROUGH Readers will remember that in Monday's issue we published an intimation that the Post and Telegraph Department branches: throughout the Dominion were making a clothes d.rive in swer to Her Excellency Lad y Galway's appeal for garments for refugees. Arrangements made between the Whakatane Post Office officials and the Patriotic Committee, provide for the undertaking of the drive in the Borough on Wednesday, July 24th, and postmen will not collect on Saturday. For the benefit of those in the country wishing to give clothes, the previous arrangements stand, i.e. theparcels will be collected by the R.D. vans on Saturday. A letter to householders, circularised by the Post Office free of cost, contains all details. In tin's circular, the honorary secretary of the Whakatane Patriotic Committee, Mr D. V. Saunders, says* "An appeal has been made to the local Patriotic Committee to co-op-erate iu the Lady Galway appeal for goods and garments of evcrv description which arc to be sent overseas for use by refugees. "The Committee is co-operating wholeheartedly and requests all possible assistance from those to whom this letter is addressed. It is ix>mted out that the plight of homeless and destitute people overseas calls for selfless and unremitting-action on the part of every member of the community, and the Committee Is confident of a good response to this appeal. "The Whakatane Men's Committee will conduct a door to door collection on the evening of Wednesday, July 24. Although most of the collecting will probably be done on the evening of the 24tii some of the collectors may find it more convenient to call during the day. Will you please therefore arrange to have your contribution ready for collection at any. time- during the day on / 24th inst. "All classes of wearing apparel, clothing, under-clothing, hats, over- . coats Avilil. be acceptable, for babies, children, and aidults of both sexes. Also garments or material suitable for remaking may lie included. Only boots and shoes worth, repairing should be included and any repairsnecessary will be arranged by the Committee. You are asked to ensure , that goods donated are clean,' in a thoroughly hygienic condition and that garments etc, are in thorough repair. "This early, intimation' is given to provide ample time for ctonors to arrange , their parcels complete,.. in accordance with the above, 'prior to the collection. Should your , goods be not collected for any reason or should you have a subsequent package, you are invited to leave them at the Red Cross Shop.""
