SCRAPPING TRAM LINES STfeEL FOR WAR PURPOSES London lias about 90 miles of disused tramway tracks, representing about 30,000 tons of the highest quality steel, of which the country is in need for war purposes. The Ministries of Transport and Supply have offered the Borough Councils owning these tramways £(5 a ton for the steel, which is nearly double the controlled price for scrap metal. But even at this price the councils will l l ose heavily for it is estimated that the cost of taking up the lines and making the roads again would work out at about £8 »per ton.
