THE "GOOD ENDEAVOUR" LEAGUE FOR YOUNG READERS ONLY

What ho, what ho, ma hearties. How do y/ou like our friends the Americans? I noticed that some of you h.id quite ai lot of difficulty in understanding the twang of the New Yorkers. Still everyone is trying to be friendly so we can't complain can Ave? The only thing I must insist on is that you take care of the traffic. Its just about four times as bad as London, and on the whole the traffic is much faster, so I want you all to keep a sharp lookout when you cross the roads and zones. I don't want any accidents to happen. Well lads and lassies, I have to-day made arrangements for us to visit the tall Woolworth buildings, which are supposed to be the taHest in the world. Keep behind me, ajid First Mate, T want you to see that no one straggles behind and gets lost. Off we go then. Righto. Let's travel by way of Fifth' Avenue and watch all the exciting things that happen. As you see, there is practically an endless stream of motor cars, vans, trucks and bicycles. What a busy time the traffic officer has at the intersections. Overhead into FortySecond Street, there dashes the elevated railway at a' speed which would, be considered dangerous in New Zealand. Its hard to believe that all these transport systems are necessary to bring New Yorkers to Avork. Yet there is another, and fiven more important systems which Ave have not seen yet—the Under-* ground. In "New York they call it the 'Subway.* You can see one of the clearing stations for this serA r ice from here, btit look here wc stand at the foot of the great skyscraper, Avhich Ave arc going to visit. Get ready for a 900 foot ride in the longest lift-well in the Avorld. Yours till next Aveck. Peter the Whaler. *
