RACING NOTES

Toialisator Turnover. Up tb the/ first day of June the Dominion totalisator for the season was just over £5,000,000 while the stakes distributed were £400,000; Greatly Improved. The Taranaki hurdler, Aussie Ra, competed at the Waikato and Auckland winter meetings, and is now much improved as the result of the trip. Being a powerful gelding he is likely to run very prominently at < the Wellington fixture. Re-Commissioned. Cetewayo, acknowledged to be the best two year old in Manafwatu this season, has just been re-com-missioned. He is expected to be a very fine thre« year old performer, and probably his trainer will be amply justified in taking the colt up before early spring. Another Defaulter. Among the rising two year olds at Trentham is the Defoe—Polyanna colt, that is considered -to have a distinct likeness in conformation and style to the New Zealand champion three year old Defaulter. H& stands 16 hands and is powerfully built throughout. Half the Profits. The Matamata Racing Club has decided to donaite to the Patriotic Funds half the net profits from its winter meeting to be held on July 20. This is a very commendable action, as the club is really in .need of .finance with, which to continue its building scheme. Further Progress. That the. Roborua Rocing Club is progressive cannot be denied. Last year the club made big strides with the erection of new buildings and the formation of a course that now ranks among the best in the Dominion. Lately it has constructed a steeplechase course, which will be used on July 29 on the occasion of the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club meeting. Another Cheap One. Tutor, winner of the Hunters' Steeplechase at Te Rapa on Saturday was recently purchased at a low figure by Mr J. C. Edmunds, of Ellerslie, who first came into sporting circles with the purchase of that erratic horse at the starting barrier, Orate, who however very quickly returned more than his purchase money, and in this respect Tutor has done likewise. Mr Edmunds camej out from England only last year, and iis now looked upon as the fortunate purchaser of cheap horses. A High Rank Pedigree. The two year old Beau Ciel is reported to have wintered Avell at Trentham, and is now ready to be i put into work again. This season he only started twice, his owner evidently being one who does not like being hard on a juvenile. The colt may, therefore, be all the better as a three year old. Judging by his pedigree lines he should be one that will justify the action of the stable, for he is by Beau Fere from Flying Mist, a sister to Caress (by 1 Martian), the dam of Cuddle and Padishah. He is owned by Mr R. ' Murphy, of Concentrate and Cuddle \ fame. The Wellington Meeting. ? The Auckland horses engaged at f the Wellington meeting this week are Midland, Tutor, Expellant, Phileinup, Prival, Jack Tar; Very Glacl, r Saocone, Orate, Brazilian, En Tour, [ Jewelled Girdle, Hessketoon, Survalr C yon, Hot Box, Erlick, Kena and Silver Glow. Notwithstanding the fact that the Trentham course is practically always heavy, or very heavy s in July, the Aucklanders, year by year, win their share of the prize * money. Certainly they are well prac [ ' -Used in the art of galloping through mud, for many of them have had 1 Ellerslie, Te Awamutu and Te Raps experience during the past foui weeks. .
