HAILE SELASSIE
back from obscurity Tlvc former Emperor of Abyssinia, Haile Selassie, has emerged from the obscurity of bis villa in Bath, and has taken a suite at a London hotel where he is receiving a constant stream of visitors. His activities have special significance in view or the raising of the Abyssinian flag in Palestine and the appointment of Piturari Birru, one of the leading chiefs in the Emperor Menelik's day, as chief of the Abyssinian forces in Kenya. A member of Haile Selassie's staff said: "The Emperor is here in view of present events, but i.is plans and the nature, of his business must remain a secret. He is fully aware 01 what Italy's intervention means for his people. For the lasl two years there hav* been repealed accounts of hotw the Abyssinians were continuing theii resistance to Italian rule—sometimes under leaders who had ostensibly gone over to the Italians. The Italians are reported to have executed Ras Hailu, who joined the Italians during the Italo-Ethiopian war in 1935. He was formerly the rul'er of Gojam, and was reputed to be the wealthiest man in Abyssinia.
