OBITUARY

, yMR .-H* M.. NORRIS A former well known personality of the district, Mr Herbert Murray ("Bert") Norris, died in Auckland last week, aged 75 years. Mr Norris was overseer for the Whakatane County Council about 30 years ago when a good deal of new road construction Was in progress. When the Land?? department began the drainage of the Rangitaiki Swamp hie became. an overseer for the department, residing at Thornton during the period of the Great War; He built the house which later was bought by the Education Department for a, teacher's residence at Thornton. Later he served in a similar capacity on the Lands Department's drainage scheme on the Hauraki Plains-: Ih recent years Mr Norris had in retirement at Mount Eden, Auckland. Mr Norris was twice married, and is 'survived by\his. wife and an adult family.
