SCHOOL CONCERT
CHILDREN ENTERTAIN CAPACITY HOUSE RED CROSS FUNDS BENEFIT The Red Cross funds benefited to the extent of £17 9s as the result of a concert staged in the King Street Hall on Wednesday night by the pupils of the Whakatane School, under the direction of Miss M. White side. There was a capacity house for the performance, which lasted almost three hours. The standard of the entertainment was particularly good and was enjoyed by parents and children alike, especially by the artists, who put their hearts into the work. Teachers of both divisions of the school assisted in the presentation of the concert;, the headmaster, Mr G. C. Southey, acting as stage man* ager and announcer. Mesdames F. Lysaght and K. Armstrong and Mr A. Seebeck were the pianists. The programme in detail was-:— "There'll Always Be An England," Patty Lysaght and chorus; Singing, Std. 1 and Primers; Choral Speaking, Std. 2 boys; Singing, (N. Butt, soloist) Std. 2 girls; Play, "Echo and Narcissus," Miss Whiteside's Std. 3; Singing, Std. 2 boys; Choral Speaking Std. 2 girls; Football Song, Miss Whiteside's Std. 3; Choral Speaking, Std. 4; Singing. "Slumber Song," Miss Whiteside's Std. 3; Song, "Raining Sunbeams," Patty Lysaght; Choral Speaking, Miss Whiteside's Std. 3. (Girls); Singing, Miss O'Brien's Std. 3; Dance Valerie Hannah; Choral Speaking, Miss O'Brien's Std. 3; Dance, Miss Whiteside's Std. 3 (Girls), Phyllis Rivett, soloist; Singing, soloist Gay Burt, Std. 4; Folk Dance, Std. 5; Singing, Std. 5; Folk Dance, High School; Play, "Seeing the World,'' Std. 6; Dance, Isobel Martin; Singing, Std. 6; Character Sketch, Ann Littlejohn; Choral Speaking, Std 6; Drill to Music, High School; Folk Dance, High School; Turkish Tragedy, High School. Miss* Whiteside expresses her thanks to all those who helpel to make the concert such a success, particularly to Mrs F. Lysaght, Mrs K. Armstrong, Mr Maliy Senr., Mr F. Lysaght, Borough Electrical Engineer. Mr Jarrett for use of Cur-* tains from the Band,' Mr R. Ferry and the other members of the Men's Patriotic Committee. Two donations, amounting to £1 5s were sent in by members of the school staff. The Red Cross Secretary also acknowledges with thanks an amount of five shillings received from the children of Miss Whiteside's class, being part of their prize money won on Children's Day at the Show.
