BITING COMMENT ON ITALY'S FIGHTING ABILITY
While no one has ever denied the fighting ability of the Germans, the Italians, as soldiers, are the subject of a vast crop of jokes. One of the latest purports to be an account of a talk between Sir Neville Henderson, former British Ambassador in Berlin, and Herr Hitler, Muring which the latter declared that, in the event, of his going to war with Britain and France, the Italians would come in on his side whenever he ordered them to. ''That is only fair," quoth Sir Neville. "We had to have them la'st time." A biting comment on Italy's fighting prowess is attributed to Lord Gort. Discussing the manning of the frontier between France and Italy, Lord Gort, so it is said,, remarked: "While Italy is neutral, we must keep four divisions there; if she comes into the war on Germany's side, two will be sufficient, but if she comes in on our side, we shall have to send eight."
