RACING NOTES
Now a Cheap Horse. Last season the Musketoon geld-i ing, Hessketoon, was sold to Mr R. M. Taylor, of Te Aroha* for. the munificent sum of £30. By winning one race and being \placed several times, he paid his way and was purchased in February last by Mr J. K. Koberstein, of Hamilton' for £250. For some f)ime"'the seller appeared to have the best of the deal, but this month Hessketoon apparent ly deciding , to make good has won three hurdle races in succession, with stakes aggregating £700. Big Bet Cancelled. In respect to the cancellation of a big odds bet the following facts are at. least interesting. Four weeks before the Lincolnshire and Grand! National were run a backer telephoned to a leading London bookmaker inquiring the price of Quar-tier-Maitre and Bogslcar. He accepted an offer of £10,000 to £25. Lafjer the same day the backer phoned again asking the penciller if he would mind cancelling the bet. He added: "I have been through the form of Bogskar again, and I don't think he's good enough to win the National." The bookmaker agreed, and doubtless later he was somewhat pleased. How the would-be backer felt has not been recorded., Good Hurdler. El Meynell Avon his second race in as many starts over fences when he repeated his success at Otalci last month by also capturing the Pukehou Hack Hurdles. He moved through fast to take charge going fio the hurdle near the five furlongs, and, though challenged by Pekoe in the run home, he stayed on to score by half a length. El Meynell AA'as |nade a pronounced favourite, and he won probably more easily than the margin suggested. Getting On. Rebel Star is approaching his eleventh year, and is Avonderfully sound in wind and limb, in spite of a fairly sti-enuous career. He is r half-brother to Cott'ingham, and has shown an aptitude for jumping both over hurdles and country. In all probability he will be given a chance to earn distinction as a jumper later in the year. Rebel Star is now owsn-. Ed and trained by Mr G. G. Shaw, of Riecarton, father of Mr J. S. Shaw, who previously owned and trained the Robespierre gelding. Won All The Way. Inflation secured his first success with his progeny when Classform won a division of the Waikanae Hack Scurry at Otaki last winter, and the first division •of the same event recently was taken by another of the Inflations, the two year old Silver Shekel, who was in charge from the end of the first half furlong and was always going like n winner. Silver Shekel had two starts early in the season, and when resuming recently at Awapuni he ran third in a "big maiden field. He is out of the Lapidary mare Princess Lajean, a half-sister to Arrow Lad, and he Is owned by His breeder, Mr D. Bridewell, for whom he is trained at Awapuni bj T ,Ci J. Thompson.
