From indefinite forward play the Blues initiated a fine dribbling rush Paroa went down before the attack and Fitchett following through notched a good try. The kick went astray. Whakatane 3, Paroa 0. Playing well the Blues continued to press but Old came through and made ground. Howat dropped his pass and Paroa poured through the opening. Dodd. narrowly missed the objective with a free kick from fi difficult angle. Howat and Rayner figured in the counter move Tiut Paroa's marking was. too sound. The Blacks swung to the attack following a clever piece of jienetration by Rore. Working as a machine the forwards made desperate efforts to break the Blue defence, but lj r HoAvat dazzled the opposition with a cut in that paved the way to the line. The Black rearguard overtook b3 r a great effort and Whare wera was lucky to force just prior to half-time. The opening stages of the second half were in Paroa's favour, the Blue defence breaking up beneath a series of well supported attack.by loose forward formations. An apparent try was disallowed but short afterwards Dodd sent a beautiful kick over the bar from a penalty Paroa 3, Whakatane 3, Bright rugby ensued Gleland following through well and Jackson cutting in. However the tables were reversed when Rore started, a passing rush which resulted in Dodd scoring in the corner. The scorer narrowly missed with the kick. Paroa 0, Whakatane 3. Quick to avenge, the Whakatane pack with Russell in the van invaded but Dodd. and Wharewern proved safe. Fitchett threaded his way through the opposition but came to grief with Rore at fullback. A second attempt by tiro, same man might have evened the score had he tossed out to his supports rather than electing to go, solo. Mr B. Norman was referee.
