McLean, late of Cam--bridge, has a nice team in work at Ellerslie. and will be well represented at spring meetings, especially in the Auckland province. The programme for the Matamata winter meeting to be held on July20th has been duly approved. The stakes will total £1275, the two principal events being the Matainata Handicap of £250 and the Open* Steeplechase, £250. The committeeof the club has decided that at least 50 per cent of the profits of the meeting will lie donated to patriotic funds. A Strong Stable. The Fred Smith stable at Taltaninlwhose leading candidates scored repeatedly in the first half of the present season, and later experienced a long run of non-success has just taken up Proud Fox, Sunola and O'relio, with a view to early spring racing. T hey may be ready -to compete at the August and September meetings, and thereby raced intoform for the big fixtures in spring and svun me r. A Surprise Entry. An unexpected nomination for theWaikato Racing Club's PatrioticMeeting was that of Llangollen, who the greater part of the prAuij: season has not been before the racing public with the colours up. More than likely she will be but lightly raced during the winter, anil when the spring comes round she may be sufficiently forward in respect to racing condition to again; take her place sufficiently with the best handicap company.
