APPEAL FOR FUNDS
FOOTBALLERS ASSIST WHAKATANE STARtS CON-i TRIBUTION An action which should set at rest allegations made that the sporting bodies in Whakatane are doing little to assist patriotic appeals, was the donation of £5 made by the Whakatane , Star Football Club in response , to the radio appeal, broadcast from IZB on Monday night. It is not knoAA'n Avhetlier other sports organisations contributed on that particular occasion, but the action of the Whakatane Star Club, /is commendable the more because Avhen the s,eason commenced, the Club had only 6s 6d! as a bank account. Various competitions have helped the finances a little but the £5 donated for tlhe Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund represents more than a mere slice of the present exchequer. Incidentally, the Avinners of the competitions run by the club recently Ave re Mr J. T. Harris, of Taneatua, and Mr B. Wilkins, of the Rangitaiki Dairy Company's factory, Edgecumbe.
