RUGBY FOOTBALL

SATURDAYS GAMES

POROPORO MAINTAINS UN>-

BEATEN RECORD

Considering the counter-attraction of the procession in town, there Avas quite a good attendance at the Do- — main on Saturday, when, continuing the Whakatane Rugby Union's competitions, Poroporo defeated Paroa, 6 —o, and Ahuwhenua went down to Whakatane Star by a margin of three points. The former game was one of the best witnessed this year, though both teams Avere not at full strength Paroa being handicapped the more " by the absence of players. The game was open for the most part and in stages was very willing. Both packs worked hard and the backs saw plenty of the ball. The Poroporo backline got going once or twice and in one or two attempts was unlucky is not being able to finalise them. The Paroa rearguard also was unfortunate once or twice, although it was the - van who did most of the attacking ■ v and individual players were invalu- 1 = able on defence. J l I A feature of the game was the exhibition of fullback play given by Korereko, for Poroporo. His positional play was very sound and he extricated his side from difficult positions more than once. His line kicking for the most part was excellent. With coaching, attention to tackling, and a little more experience this player will be up to representative standard During the latter stages of the game. Hoi lis, of Paroa, and L. Mas-> on, Poroporo, had to receive attention for injuries. The winning margin (unconverted tries by K. Merito and Kingi) was a fair reflex of the play. The match should be worth seeing when both these teams meet at full strength. Mr F. Darvill was referee.
