POULTRY DIVISION

OPENING ON FRIDAY , FINE SHOW OF BIRDS The poultry section of the Show was opened on Friday afternoon by the Association president, Mr A. .1. Canning, who said: "The poultry division has always been a prominent feature of our Show, rightly in a community concerned with primary industries." The president then referred to the fact that it was the only poultry show this year in the Bay of Plenty—in fact in the area between Hamilton and Gisbornc, With the exception of Rotorua. "In Mr Nixon we had probably the soundest and most experienced judge in the Dominion," said Mr Canning. Mr Nixon had bred Lad,y Alma, at that time the workV's record holder for egg-laying and that showed his capabilities. Mr Nixon had actcd as judge for the Whakatane Winter Show for a number; of years. The Best in New Zealand!. Commenting on the birds, Mr Nixon said they were as good as the best in New Zealand. They could lead the country for type but n drawback would possibly be local fanciers' lack of breeding knowledge. Of the four hens in the New Zealand winning team of last year (1109 eggs), two had come from Whakatane and he had no hesitation

in recommending the purchase of Whakatane stock to other district breeders. Daring the evening Mr Nixon monstrated points in raising poultry and answered a number of questions from local enthusiasts.
