PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE
FORMATION AT EDGECUMBE SUPPORT FOR SICK AND WOUNDED FUND At the new Edgecumbe Hall a re- ( presentative and enthusiastic meeting of Edgecumbe residents was responsible for launching yet another branch Patriotic Committee under circumstances which auger well for the successful operation of this important work; A comprehensive explanation of the initial steps which had been taken in extending the work of the Provincial Council to the smaller inter-zone and branch groups was given by Messrs McCracken and Spence in their capacity as County Councillors and also by Mrs G. H. Irving, who has been appointed by the local women's organisations to represent them on the inter-zonc committee. Committee Elected. Considerable discussion took place and a committee was elected, comprising Messrs D. Radcliffe* .J. Black, D. Spence, A. Thompson, F. Patience and lan Gow. As representing the ladle's,- Mesdames J. Jamiesori, C. A, Le Lievre, A. Marx, W. B, Cow find G. IL Irving Mr Patience was elected honorary secretary and at a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr lan was elected chairman. The principal work of the committee will be in organising the efforts which will be made periodically in the future but it is hoped fhat those within the are« .vh<3 wish to do so. but nave not yet contributed to the present appeal for the Sick and Wounded FuYul will communicate --with Mr F. Patience, who will be glad to , receive thes? donations on behalf of the Red Cross. This must be done before the ,22nd inst. In order to give a lead in thi.i matter to the Edgecumbe district two prominent residents within the committee's area, Messrs Alex McLean- and W. A. McCracken, both of whom were most anxious that the: appeal for the Sick and Wounded Fund should receive local support, have handed in cheques for £25 and £20 respectively. The com-» mittee is grateful for this material" expression of support. Mr Alex McLean's Offer. Mr Alex McLean has promised to make a further contribuv tion of £100 in the full belief and expectation that ten other settlers in the Rangitaiki area will respond with a Hik'l amount. This is a particularly generous offer and would be rewarded with similar contributions.
