POLICE COURT
SEVERAL CHARGES PREFERRED TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT PROSECUTES Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., was on the Bench for the monthly sitting of the Opotiki Court. Sergeant J. lsbister conducted prosecutions foi the police. Eruera Harawira (Mr Hei) was charged that on or about March 3,1940, he stole one pair of hair clippers and one sharpening steel, valued at 12s. Harawira was convicted and lined £2, with expenses £5, and admitted to probation until the fine is paid. He was ordered to return flic articles to the owner. Harawira was further charged that on March 3, at Waihau Bay, he stole £4 in money, the property of Minnie Robertson. This case was dismissed. Sidney Pledger was charged that on April 25, at Opotiki, he used insulting words in a public place, to wit, the main Opotiki-Taneatua highway, to Rugby Jamieson. He was convicted and fined £3 and costs 10s. Traffic Breaches. The following cases were brought .forward by Inspector Delves, acting on behalf of the Transport Department: —■ A. W. Ruff (Mr Hodgson) carry-* ing on a goods service in a controlled area, otherwise than in conformity with the terms of his license. Convicted and fined 10s and costs £1 4s. Charles Matchett (Mr Murray), on 4th April at Waioeka, being the | owner of a heavy motor vehicle operated such vehicle before having obtained a heavy traffic license. Convicted and fined 10s and costs 13s • < Also operating a motor vehicle without a warrant of fitness. Convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs.
