OPENING TODAY
WHAKATANE'S GREAT SHOW
INFLUX OF VISITORS The excitement which heralds the annual winter show has Whakatane well in its grip. Yesterday visitors from all parts of the province started to arrive and the main street had a most animated appearance. From the number of tents already on the exhibition area it would appear that the side-show section will this year be stronger than ever. Many of the visiting entertainers were busy round the town with posters and publicity •circulars the presence of which added still more to the colourful scene. Record Entries. From the h;;rd worked secrctarj, Mr L. R. Spring, we learn that in many of the classes record entries have been received. This in itself is an indication of the widespread v public interest and an endorsement of the active publicity policy adopted by the committee. Exhibitors range from as far afieltl as Wellington, Taihape, Wanrganui. Rotorua, Hamilton, Auckland Te Aroha and Whangarei illustrating the growing reputation of the ;show as a first-class exhibition ot ;a singularly high standard. The local people in spite of the depressing nature of the war have responded magnificently, and all classes remain in a strong and healthy con•dition. From the country districts farmers too, lif.-ve shown a keen and loyal interest and visitors Avill once again be able to see the product;: -of the fertile Rangitaild Plains. Evening Entertainments. The programme in the hands of a special committee set up for the purpose promise a nightly entertainment which should be much appreciated by the general public.
