ROUND ABOUT

(By Aitchel)

. . . the wonder grew That one small head Could carry all he knew

Wasn't it Goldsmith Avho Avrot£that in tribute to "The Village Schoolmaster'-? I am not too sure, ' but it would seem that Mr C. Tick-' ner, member of the Harbour Board, has heard of it. Paying a tribute to the Chairman, Mr J. W. Sum-* , ner, at the annual meeting on Friday, he said-: "How he carries his: vast knowledge in his head beats me." We will also hand full points to Mr Sumner. m * * » Mistakes have been made in all kind of things in the past and no doubt Avill be made in the future. Who is perfect? Politicians, generals, admirals, husbands, even news- • paper reporters, occasionally fall from grace. ' But it is a sad story we tell of a local resident who recently attended a rather important conference in another town. Assorted directors and assistants were gathered round the Bench of Decisions when the Whakatariian rose to air his views. He had reason to refer to figures and facts and to make sure" intended to quotes them from his files. He reached for the small leather case in which he kept his papers and confidentlyslapped it on the table. He slipped the locks and threw back the top, "I will show them," he thought. He did. He showed them an assortment of lingerie ranging from this to that He still wonders how the articles came into his possession but is exceedingly grateful for the fact that the presence of two lady members of the Board staved off comment from his colleagues. m * « 9 Our London reporter tells us that a lion sejant has been adopted as a crest by the Nazi "Lion Squadron" which has achieved some notoriety in Germany by the composi-* tion of a new hymn of hate of the air. The choice of a lion may, or may not, be appropriate. But the motto: "Vestigium Leonis"—the track of the lion—that goes with it, is not a happy one. v To date the track of the lion towards Britain is marked by the wreckage of a number of Heinkel 111 bombers from this squadron, destroyed by British fighters. Perhaps "Vestigia nulla retrorsum" might have been . a better motto. And just in case you have slipped a little on the old construing, that should mean, "There is no going back." * m » » It has been pointed out that the one thing the Parashootists Club lacks is a badge, so a kindly resident with a taste for heraldry has submitted the following armorial bearings for the use of the club: Two duckshooters, blotto, couchant on a field vert, regardant an umbrella descendant in x a sky azure with a parachutist pendant. Sup-: porters: Two golfers rampant with sloped clubs, proper. The mptta "Play the Game, You Cads" is the best suggested so far. • 9 *> m The public meeting held in the Grand Theatre on Thursday night was not particularly impressive. Some of the speakers introduced matter rather irrelevant. Actually there was no discussion and it seem ed that perhaps a debate would have had more result. Of course, the anticipated ending was there, the resolution urging the formation of a War Cabinet, and the meeting ; hacf to be held to give body to the: resolution. The attendance could have been much better and could have included members of the Labour Party. As it was, it proved to be a 'Walkover,' no opposition forthcoming. I looked at it quite impartially from a political point of view but was somewhat disappointed at tha lack of copy for* this column*
