WEDDING BELLS SMITH -SULLIVAN A Avedding of considerable interest to Whalcatane and district was that solemnised at the Knox Church on Monday morning betAveen Jean, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. StilliA r an, of Domain Road, Whakatane, and Allan William, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith, of AAvakeri. The Rev. J. Pattison performed the ccremony and Miss Hobin Avas at. the organ. The church was beautifully decorated, in Avliite and scarlet. The bride, who Avas given away by her father, wore a trained frock of cream .'and. silver embossed cloque, cut on classical lines. The draped bodice was made with a cowl neck and long sleeves and the slim fit : H ted skirt fell from a high pointed waistline. Her tulle Avas pleated round the head Avith a circle silver leaves and she carried a sheaf of chiysanthemums, dahlias and .Jnaiden-hair fern. In attendance as bridesmaid Avas Miss Isabel Sullivan, sister of the l>ride, and she wore a frock of cream sheer georgette, with' scarlet velvet bows and sash. She Avore a topknot of scarlet cyclamens. Mr Cliff McCracken Avas best man and the ushers Avere Mr M. r Sullivan and Mr G. Holland. A reception was held at the Parish Hall, where Mrs Sullivan reher guests Avearing a tailored costume of air force blue and a liat to match. She carried a bouvquet of scarlet tonings. Mrs Smith wore a bottle-green ensemble and carried a bouquet" of scarlet carnations. LEES—JARRETT On Saturday, June Ist. St. John's Church, Whakatane,, Avas the scene of a very pietty wedding, when Naida Beatrice, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Jarrett. of Whaka-* tane, Avas married to Maurice Frederick, second son of Mrs H. Leesj of Matata. The bride, Avho entered the church on the arm of her father, A\;ore a heautiful gown of deep cream sat-' in, cut on simple lines, with p lieart-shaped neckline. Tiny satin buttons ornamented the back of the frock to the Avaistline and ,the skirt fell to form a graceful train finished with a sprig of orange blossom , on each side. The cream silk net Veil worn over the face was appli<jued at the corners in satin flowers and fell from a coronet of pearls arfel orange blossom. She carried a sheaf of Avhitc sweet peas, freezias and crhysanthemums, with asparagus fern. Attendants cf the bride were Mites Gwen Kent and Miss Jean McGregor, who Avore pretty frocks of net over taffeta in shades of midnight blue and fuschia respective'y. They wore picture hats and carried bouquets in fuschia tonings. The bridegroom Avas attended by Mr Alan Thompson as bast man and Mr Ron Lees as groomsman. To»receive her guests at tfiei re : -- ception 1 el:l in the Hotel lounge, Mrs Jarrett chose a smart pelrol green suit, burgundy toque and accessories and fur. She carried a posy to tone. Mrs Lees, mother of the bridegroom, Avore a fur coat over a becoming frock of brown embroidered cloque Avith brown hat and accessories and carried a posy to tone. When the happy couple left on their honeymoon the. bride travelled in a frock of green angora with brown turban and accessories. They carried Avith them the best Avishes of their many friends.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE WHAKATANE BRANCH FREE OF INTEREST LOAN TO GOVERNMENT The June meeting held on 4th. inst. Avas well attended and during the early part of the afternoon a considerable amount of business was finalised. Loan to Government: It was unanimonsly dccidcd to offer the amount held in the Building Fund (£195) to the Government as a free of interest Iban for the duration <of the war and (i months afterwards. A member donated £1 on the spot, and . it was decided to raise the amount to £200 by drawing on the General Fund. Soldiers Parcels: A further batch of parcels is to be despatched ing June, and these are in the charge of Mrs C. Zinsli. An instructive reading was given by Mrs SteAvart on Ncav Zealand Birds and their Habits, and aj talk on a trip to. Cape Kidnappers by Mrs MatthcAvs Avas also enjoyed ,by all. Volunteers were asked for to help the ladies in charge of the Institute stall and the stall for the Blind Institute at the forthcoming Winter Show, to Avhich there Avas no lack of response. Results of the competitions were announced as follows:— Best Flower: Mrs Mclsaiacs. Thrift Article; Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs Albiston 2. Chutney: Mrs Ring 1, Mrs SteAVart 2. Knitting (article in 4-ply AA r oolJ.Mrs Mcjvenzie 1, Mrs Larsen 2.' The Knitting Circle reported that so far they had completed nine pairs mittens, four scarves and tAvo balaclavas for the presentation to the forces. •A novelty waltz was'won by ]V|rs Mclsaacs and Mrs Wheeler.
