PARACHUTE TROOPS
POSED AS TRADESMEN A returned English businessman described the lending of 1000 para-t chutists at The Hague during a con tinuous 24 hour air raid. He said that cach party comprised 40 parachutists under a sergeant. As the parachutists made their way towards the main buildings, women members oi the "Fifth Column" at the windows of houses clapped their hands as a signal, whereupon the parachutists approached and received instructions. Some were disguised aiS butcher's and baker's boys and carried baskets covered with a white cloth under which lay hand grenades. After the first assaults on the Town Hall and other key buildings, civilians armed only with butchers' knives formed the anti-parachute corps.
