Americans seeking to enlist in the Canadian forccs are not asked too many questions, it is officially admitted in Ottawa. Thousands of Americans have either enlisted or tried to enlist. A hundred of them went overseas in the First Canadian Divisions. no American arriving in Canada after September 1, 1939, ma3 r enlist in the Canadian forces unless he becomes naturalised. But if he claims to have been residing in Canada before that date little trouble is taken to eheck his statement. In view of thi> loophole, officials said, a strict watch is being kept' against active recruiting of Americans in Canada. No violations have been reported yet.. Many Americans who w r ere refused passports in the United States to enable them to fight abroad, are believed to be obtaining them from foreign Consuls-General in Canada. In such cases, it is considered that the responsibility lies with the foreign country concerned, not with Canada. Naturalised or not, Americans en listing in the Canadian forces take an oath of allegiance to the King, in the same way as Canadians. More thousands of Americans are taking part in Canada's war effort as civilians. They are particularly welcome as technicians, and are in great demand in connection with tire Air Fore*;.
