LOCAL RESERVE FORCE

AFTER clue deliberation the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association has determined to follow the lead, given in other ocnties and form in the Whakatane district a special unit of the Volunteer Reserve Force, which has as its object the home defence of the Dominion in the event of an emergency. We have been informed by the secretary, Mr C. A. Head,, that the new organisation though as yet entirely unofficial will be open to members of the R.S.A. and other men who for various reasons are prevented from enlisting for service overseas. It is intended to put the force upon a definitely military basis whereby members will refresh their knowledge of fire-arms, parade work and physical drill. A register of all who are willing to join up will be opened at the BEACON office during the next few weeks and it is confidently expected that the anticipated strength of 200 will be quickly realised. Although as yet nothing definite has been arranged it <is considered that there should, be weekly parades for the purpose of training in all branches of military life. There will be instruction in rifle practice, Vickers machine guns, field manoeuvres and. route marches. Many local ex-Diggers maintain that apart from per forming a useful and perhaps vital work, they will also benefit themselves by the course, and physically, at least should be much improved as a result. Those who enter their names must be. prepared to take the whole thing seriously and by their exmple aand enthusiasm give a lead to other and. younger men who even today faiil to realise the realities and the grim possibilities of the war with Germany. Notification as to parades, routine and equipment will be supplied in the near future to all men who join the new Reserve.
