THE LAST CHANCE

SICK AND WOUNDED APPEAL FINAL NATIONAL APPEAL The giant appeal for £250,000 for the sick, wounded and distressed of tiie present war, which is now in full swing throughout New Zealand, is the last campaign of a national character that will be permitted for patriotic purposes. It is therefore the last occasion on which the Joint Council of the N.Z. Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John will have of appealing direct to the public for financial support for their worthy work. In future all appeals will be of a provincial character and the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John will have to rely upon the provincial councils for a share of moneys raised in these local efforts. This fact has given an added incentive to the army of voluntary helpers who have thrown their full weight behind the great appeal since its beginning on May 12th. Local committees and energetic workers have never been assembled on such a national scale as in the first week of the campaign and the organisers at headquarters ai Wellington report extraordinary efforts on behalf of the fund. To raise £250,000 in a few weeks, I it is pointed out, is a colossal effort under any circumstances, but the officials of the Joint Council are confident that with the aid of their complete organisation the goal will be reached. "It is our last chance to go direct to the public for funds," explained Mr J. Abel, Hon. Dominion Organiser and Treasurer. "That is why we are asking for a special effort from everyone. We have made a magnificent start. If we. can keep it tip we will reach our goal.'"
