WARTIME WAGES
VIEWPOINT OF FARMERS The possibility of a general increase in wages was revieAved with alarm at the annual meeting of t)he Manawatu Provincial Executive of the Farmers* Union., and it was decided to suggest to the Government that there be no increase unless prices for farm produce are also advanced. It was considered that if there is to be an increase in wages it should be done through an increase of working hours to 44 a week The meeting decided to impress upon the authorities the need for other sections of the community to put forward an effort to make sacrifices equal to those expected of the farmer in order to promote She war effort. One member expressed the view that there were too many people having a,n easy "Time. The Government should be made to see that if more food was wanted more assis'aTce must, be forthcoming from i "sheltered people."
