FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT ADOPTED LETTERS RECEIVED Among the recommendations of the Finance and General Purposes Committee adopted by the Whaka-' tane County Council on Wednesday was the donation of £2 2s to the New Zealand Crippled Children Society. A grant of a similar amount was made to the Whakatane Citizens' Band. m m * • The Opotiki County Council advised that the present situation |e-< garding Kutarere Wharf is that the Northern Steamship Co's lease of the wharf buildings expired on De-f cember 31st last, and although the Company has used the Avharf on occasions since, it is not Avilling t|o re-lease. The Opotiki County Council subsequently informed the Northern Company that failing satisfactory arrangements being made with the Council for re-leasing, the wharf buildings may be dismantled and disposed of. A final reply frqm, the Company is being awaited. The Whakatane Council could rest assured that no drastic steps, such fas closing or dismantling the wharf will be taken until the matter has been referred to it. The recommendation was that the County Chairman and the County Clerk be a committee to confer with the Opotiki County Council. « * • » A letter from the Commissioner of Transport advised that a number of Local Atithorities have applied to the Minister of Transport for his approval to the employment of part-time Traffic Inspectors and the Minister regrets that he will be unable to approve such appointmentSi unless the applicant has a thorough knowledge of legislation dealing with his work; be employed a major portion of his time on traffic work and must appear in Court and on duty in uniform. The recommendation was that the Council renew its application to the Commissioner of Transport for permission for Inspector Carling to test applicants for drivers licenses. # w w Other letters received included one from the Secretary of the Marine Department advising the Council j that there is no legal necessity to obtain the approval of the Minister to By-Law restricting the speed of motor vehicles on Ohope Beach. The letter added that it was considered advisable that the. matter be referred for investigation at this stage so that there is no likelihood of the By-law being upset at a later date. A responsible Departmental officer will submit a report regarding the proposal.
