Dear Sor,

Letters to the Editor must be clearly written on one side of the paper only. Where a nom-de-plume is used the name of the writer must be enclosed for reference purposes only. PATRIOTIC APPEALS AND CONTRIBUTIONS Sir, —I agree most sincerely with the opinion expressed in your leader of May 22nd that it would be much better if persons willing to assist with the Patriotic and Red Cross appeals could bring themselves to the point of contributing a sum per week. As you say, it is the fairest and most agreeable method (especially to tlie collectors). It is surely little enough on the part of those who cannot give personal service to contribute, say, 2/G per week and the promoters would have some idea as to the amount they., could depend on and would be an assurance to our boys overseas that we will not let them down. As it is not much good expounding an idea or argument unless one is prepared to set an example, I enclose £1, representing 2/6 per week each for the Patriotic Fund and the Red Cross for four weeks. This appeal is a matter that the BEACON can hammer home and hold up as a real Beacon to those at home, showing them the way to do their bit; Yours etc., F. MAHY, Senr. (We acknowledge receipt of the sum of £1 from Mr Mahy and will hold it until such time as a fund on the lines envisaged by him can be established. Ed.)
