MINISTER'S VISIT
THE announcement that the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) will be an Whakatane on Tuesday, will be welcomed by all local businessmen. Steps are already being taken to interest the Minister in the projected coastal access road and every aspect as it affects Whakatane will be brought to his notice. The Minister's decision, will however be largely influenced by the recent course of events effecting his Department. The drastic weeding out of P.W.D. employees as promised by the Prime Minister in his recent statement covering the Dominion's newest war measures will no doubt have a very cramping effect upon any projects of a major variety and unless a particularly strong case is put forward covering the advantages of quicker transport, shorter distances between town and town and the opening up of isolated areas, the question runs a serious lisk of being shelved.
