RAGING NOTES

(By Zetland) A Winter Candidate. The Nigger Minstrel representative Quadroon, a fine winter performer, is galloping in great style at Awapuni. He may loom large at the Wellington and Canterbury fixtures. Not For Ellerslie. Mr Frank Onnond's Katlibella met with a slight mishap recently, and had to be put on the easy list for a brief period. She will not now be raced at Ellerslie, which fact maj' make it easier for other fancied candidates. Likes a Firm Track. One that was detrimentally affected at the Pukekohe meeting b3 r the heavy state of the track was the Vaals representative Clipper. In racing condition he was vei"3 r forward, so may again get on the winning list before long. Hunting Song Family. The majority of the members of the Hunting Song family are good on heavy tracks. One of the members, the Te Awanrutu owned Joan Peel, registered good galloping form at Pukekohe, indicating that she may soon score a win. Recommissioned. The Hawkc's Bay steeplechase candiate Salon, who scored a convincing victory over the big jumps at Cambridge last October, has again, been taken in hand at Hastings,, and more than likely will be ai/ong the contestants at the next meeting of the Waikato Hunt Club. Expected to Improve. The Auckland gelding Valmint, by Vaals—-Lomint, who generally races best in winter, was well backed in the President'is Handicap at Pukekohe. Although not placed, the gallop will have done him a lot of good, and his supporters fully expect him to make amends at Ellerslie in the early part of June. Pirate King Well. Mr J. Hogan's Pirate King is executing satisfactor3 r work on the local tracks in view of competing at the Auckland Racing Club's winter meet ing. His chances of success will greatly depend upon the state of the Ellerslie course, which has been known to be pretty heavv in winter time, and may be so again. His Turn May Come. Kingcraft, by King Lu—Caviare, was solidly backed in his Pukekohe engagement. He raced in the lead in the early stages, but weakened towards the finish. He is a fine stamp of thoroughbred, and has galloping abilit3 r . When thoroughly attuned he may spring a surprise on the public by winning when not generally expected. Full of Scotch. The form displayed b\ r the hurdler, Full of Scotch, when he won at Te Arolia in February, notwithstanding the fact that he had onty been in work a few weeks, led his party to expect him to be a top-notcher during the winter. At Hawera, however, he showed signs of soreness, and it is now considered doubtful whether he will get through a thorough preparation. Prospects Bright. Knight of Australia, who won over the battens at the January meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, was a contestant in the principal fiat event at Pukekohe, and finished sixth. This should be at least an indication that he ma 3' run prominently in the Great Northern Hurdles, more especially as lie has previously shown capabilitj- in the handling of soft going at Ellerslie. Ran Prominently. Royal Fawkes, bj' The Act, who had the distinction of defeating Merry Vaals on the second day of the Thames meeting in Januarys but who would have found considerable difficulty in repeating the performance during the following three months, registered a fourth at the Franklin meeting. He may be a good winter proposition as he has not been over-raced during the present season.
