MATATA DEFEATS AWAKERI Playing in the Rangitaiki Union's competition round, Matata journeyed to Awakeri on Saturday and ran out winners by 14-5. After eighteen minutes play a good run by M. Lees resulted in Matata opening its account, R. Lees scoring.' The kick missed. A few minutes later Jordon scored for Awa keri, Rae converting. It was not long before Matata resumed trie' offensive and from a kick through R. Lees scored. The kick failed and the score stood, Matata 6, Awakeri 5. Half-time was called shortly afterwards. The second half saw the play tightening up for a while but Matata were not to be denied and after a nice passing rush R. Lees scored in the corner. The tr3 r was not converted . Matata's kicking was not of the best, an easy shot at goal failing. Mid-«field play followed and some good opportunities were missed by both sides. Awakeri looked likely to add to their points at one stage but, the effort was not finalised. Play was swung to their end and from a nice opening by R. Howell, M. Lees touched down under the posts, the scorer converting. The game ended soon after with the score unchanged. Mr J. Thomas was referee. Juniors The junior match between Otaltiri and Awakeri, played at Otakiri, resulted in a draw, there being no score.
