THIRD ECHELON

ADJUSTING SHORTAGES INFANTRY MOVEMENTS Although both the Auckland and Hamilton areas have exceeded thetir quotas for the third echelon, which is to be mobilised this week, adjustments have had to be made by the Army to meet shortages in the Paeroa*and Whangarei areas. There isI also evidence that the southern military district, embracing the South Island, has experienced difficulty in filling its quotas. When the echelon is mobilised, artraft of Inlantrymen from the noi-* thern district is to be sent to Burn-t----ham camp, this being the first time that such a course has been taken. About 180 men are to go to Burnham as infantry reinforcements, and it seems that this is so because the southern district has not been able to supply its own reinforcement necessities. In the northern district, the Whangarei area is about 160 short of its quota.. To enable it to send a full complement into camp, about 100' men are to be detached from the Auckland area recruits for this purpose and about 60 from the Hamilton area. Thus, two Auckland area returns have been so good that, not only has it been possible to help the southern district, but also have then had sufficient men over theirr quotas to fill Whangarei*s shortage. Theshortage at Paeroa has been met by reducing its quota by about 50.
