FOR NEW ZEALAND
A tribute from England to tlic New Zealand Forces. I owe New Zealand this, that I write Of these her sons; that, for all men to see Their dauntless spirit and their loyalty. My hand should hold a torch against the night. Adventurers all—hearing the siren song That drew their forbears to a land unknown; lint linked so closely to a far-off throne That Britain's cause is theirs, as hers their tongue. First in the air, of all the Empire's sons. On the battle front to bring a Heinkcl down; And two, with shattered wings, won high renown By winning back from strange, tempestuous zones. Shoulder to shoulder at the River Plate, Steadfast, the men of the Achilles won their spurs: And from the Altmark's hold with unseen scars One came. Yet broadcast lie no word of hate. As voices call them from a land afar— Their lovely, land in Southern Seas— More grim will be their fight . . . With such as these It could not be that we should lose this war. —Anne Hunt, Norfolk, England.
