THE CITIZENS BAND

The annual meeting of the Whakatane Citizens Band, made it clear that this valuable organisation is determined to carry on in spite of the growing shortage of playing members, and the apparent disinterestedness of the townspeople generally. As an old and valued institution the band has had its ups and downs in the past, but never has it suffered so severely as at the present time. There is almost a complete dearth of young members —boys, who will train now with the idea of becoming bandsmen of the future. An effort to interest young high school lads is about to be made tin this direction and it is to be hoped Avill meet with the: response it warrants. Citizens are inclined to overlook the fact that the band is composed of men who voluntarily undertake to master an instrument 'in order that they may become proficient and thus ,be able to render a public service as a member of the town's band. In view of the present difficulties, and the praiseworthy decision to "carry on'' as a town organisation, it is the duty of everybody in future to refrain from senseless criticism, and to afford members that full measure of support and assistance to which they are so justly entitled.
