RUGBY PROSPECTS

SUB-UNION MEETS DRAW FOR SATURDAY The Whakatane sub-Union met on Wednesday night, when the president, Mr W. Henderson, reported on his efforts to obtain school footballs while in Wellington. He said that he had finished up with orders for 32, with Rangitaiki Union requiring 10,, Te Puke 8, Whakatane 10, and Rotorua 4. The shortage of these balls was acute,, due to the import restrictions. He had been able to obtain only 12 balls. A request was received from the Rotorua Union for a match on June 3rd (King's Birthday) but it was pointed out by one delegate that the custom hitherto has been to play Opotiki on that date. It was decided to give Opotiki the first opportunity of a match. "!We have got to be careful how we involve ourselves in the travelling line," said the president, who indicated that the Union would have to curtail expenditure. Some concern was expressed by delegates when it was learned that one of the grounds was not in order. The president will take the responsibility of putting the posts in on Saturday morning and charging the club concerned if the matter is not attended to before that time. The question of supplying marking flags for the grounds was referred to the clubs and arrangements for gatekeepers were left to Mr Henderson. Mr White drew the attention of the Union to the need for a notice board, centrally situated, where play ers could be advised of a cancellation of the day's play when weather conditions made it necessary. An emergency committee was formed to make the decision when unfavourable weather conditions made play doubtful. It comprised the president, secretary and Mr J. White. Waimana has entered a second junior team and this eliminates the necessity for a bye in this grade. Draw for two Saturdays. The draw for Saturday, is as foil-i lows:— Seniors.
