NEWS TRAVELS

THAT PERLEXING "WHEN IS EASTER?" REFERENCE IN ENGLISH PAPER Readers will remember that in January the question was asked of the BEACON, "When is Easter?" and advice was'sought because calendars varied and a dozen different dates were given. It was stated at that time that although the BEACON was exceedingly well informed on most things, it was unable to supply the answers to this problem and the ques tion was referred to readers. Prior to one correspondent sending in the dates on which Easter will fall for the next ten years, the Rev. S. G l . Caul ton, Anglican Minister, supplied' the solution and this was published. And now we read of the confusion in "The Church Times," published in London, and dated March 21st'. As an illustration of the way in which news it makes good reading and, headed, "Easter, Here and Elsewhere," it runs as follows;— "There has been some confusion over the date of Easter in New Zealand. (Mark the New Zealand). Several Kalendars give it as March 31st, with a note to the effect that some religious bodies observe the holiday a week earlier. One of the local papers had quite a correspondence on the matter, until it was 'solved at last' by the vicar of Whakatane. The difficulty arose through the moon reaching the full at 7 a.m. New Zealand time on Sunday, March 24, but by Greenwich Time the moon is full at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, thereby causing Easter to fall the clay after, which | day is to be observed for the salce of uniformity."
