BABY CONTEST

presentation of prizes FUNCTION AT REGENT THEATRI Prizes in connection with the local St John Ambulance Contesl were presented at the Regent Theatre last evening by Mrs A. J. Canning, wife of Mr A. J. Canning, chai) man of the St John Association.! The six winners in the Whakatane district were as follows: Ist Baby Phillip Low, prize valued at £7 10s; 2nd Baby Neville Thomas, prize valued at £4 2s; 3rd Babj Bonny Reed, prize valued at £2 10s; 4th Baby Colin Francis, prize valued at £2 0s 6d; sth Baby Carole Ben seman, prize valued £1 Is; 6th Babj Francis Webster, prize valued at 10: Gd. Mr Canning briefly outlined the history of the contest to date stating that he hoped the prize for thf Dominion would eventually be woi by a Whakatane baby. These six babies, he said, will compete in a district contest beim screened from June sth to June 18tl in llotorua, Tauranga, Whakatane Op.otiki, Gisborne and Wairoa. T'h( babies-will be numbered from 1 ti 36, and the numbers will be so intermingled to ensure that each babj lias an equal chance. The winner; of this section will then go to compete in the North Island and finally in the New Zealand contest. In connection with the prizes n special vote of thanks was accordet to local business firms through whose generosity the prizes had been donated. Mr Canning mentioned that the splendid success of the campaign was due to the excellent efforts ol Mesdames Norman (chairman of the Ladies Committee), J. Armstrong, Marsh and last but not least Mr H. Carr in whose capable hands the whole of the voting arrangements had been left. A very pleasing little ceremony ended with the presentation of the prizes each accompanied by a pretty bouquet to the mothers of the successful and lucky contestants. Bouquets were also presented to Mesames Norman and Armstrong.
