MANURE COST

SUBSIDY TO BE PAID PASSED ON TO FARMERS The introduction of a subsidy on certain imported phosphatie fertilisers Avhich have arrived in the Dominion since the outbreak of AA r ar, and also on certain expected arrivals, was announced by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, This subsidy is in addition to that at present being paid by the Government on certain raAA r materials used in the manufacture of superphosphate. The main lines concerned in the neAV subsidy are North African phosphate, Walpole guano and Seychelles guano and basic slag. The Minister said the rate would not in any case exceed 7s 6d a ton. Where the actual increase in c.i.f. and g. cost Avas beloAV 7s 6'd, a ton;, based on an average similar cost before the outbreak of Avar, only the actual increase a ton Avould be paid. "As the object of this subsidy is loAvering costs to farmer consumers the Department of Agriculture Avill require to be satisfied thatp the benefit of the subsidy is Avholly passed on to the farmers/" said the Minister. "The Department will communicate Avith importers and Avill then arrange appropriate subsidy oayments to merchants 011 reccipt
