(Z>3' Zetland) STILL IN COMMISSION When the Beau Pere mare, Kath-< be]la, competed at Waikato in February last she appeared to be not quite readj r . The racing, however, improved her so materially, that she has since Avon important events, including the Wellington Thompson Handicap. This month it was intended to allot her a spell for the winter, but the decision has been arrived at that she is to compete in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie in June and the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham in July. LOSS OF TETAHINGA Early last month the Hon Elliott Davis and Mr Oliver Nicholson, of" Auckland, purchased from Mr D. .L Barry, of Gisborne, the gelding Teta- - hinga. Since his arrival at Ellerslie he had been registering very satisfactory gallops, even to* the extent of keeping Jack Tar busy on th 3 Hat. But on he was sent out for a cross coiwi following the Pakurangta- Hunt Clubhounds. Strikincf—a""stake that held up a hurdle he sustained a broken leg and had to be destroyed. Thus in the meantime the Avell known partnership has no hurdle horse tbcarry its colours in the winter.. THE GREAT NORTHERNS The weights for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase will make their appearance after the Egmont meeting, which concludeson Monday. AN UNFORTUNATE LOSS The well known Southern sportsman, Mr E. Hay, last week sustained a rather serious loss by the death of the two year old colt by SolicitorGeneral—Princess Doreen thus a half brother to the well performed filly Doria. PONTOON VICTORIOUS The well known trainer, J. Fryer,, for manj r years in Taranaki, but now of Melbourne, won a double thismonth with the five year old Muske--toon—Panette gelding Pantoon, the events being the Highweight anil Ballhaven Handicap at Mentone. PROGRAMME FOR PADISHAH) Information is now to hand to theeffect that Padishah, whose track work at Hastings is giving his owner every satisfaction, is being specially prepared for the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdles, won by him last year under 11.5 and 11.7 respectively. This year he will probably have to carry higher weights, but nevertheless the best of the op-*-position will have to be very good to beat him. LEADING TWO YEAR OLDS In the matter of stake money won this season in the two year old class,, the following head the list: Nightbeam £1290; Doria £1270; Lou Rosa; £1225; Sir Beau £1050. KING MESTOR RE-COMMISSIONED" The nine year old -King Mestor* by King Lu—Lady Mestor, bred in Te A roha, has lately been purchase ed by Mr J. G. Wear, of Trentham, who has put him into work again with a view to contesting hurdle events during the winter. Two years? ago King Mestor created a surprise by winning the Coranna Hurdles at" the Wellington meeting. He is reported to be in excellent condition so his winning days may not j'et be over. SOUTHERN STEEPLE CHASERS The Canterbury steeplechasers, Flashlight and Streamline, have now~ entered upon their northern cam* paign. After the "EgmpKt meeting they will compete- Ol > 18th and 20th carrjr ing out their Ellerslie Northern engagements. PRIZE MONEY MAINTAINED The stakes for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting in August next will be the same as last year, £2800, for the one day fixture. TRAINING ON SATISFACTORILY" Although nearly at the veteran stage Knight of Australia is holding his racing condition really well, somuch that Ellerslie track watchers have hopes that he may race vervprominently in the Great Northern Hurdles. One point in his favour is that lie is quite at home in wintergoing, while another is that he generally gets in at a moderate poundage allotment.
