NEW CIGARETTES
BRITISH SMOKERS GREEK AND TURKISH TOBACCO Soldiers, as during the last war, may soon he supplied with all manner of little-known brands of cigarettes. The British Government is, however, endeavouring to organise approximately the normal character and quantity while refraining from further importation of Virginian tobacco from the U.S.A. It possesses £1,£00,000 worth of Greek and Turkish tobacco, the importation of which will be continued. The British Government is planning to barter £75 s poo. worth of Greek and Turkish tobacco for 12% per cent, of the Virginia tobacco stock now in the possession of the Imperial Tobacco Company,, and the British American Tobacco Company, which are holding three years' supply. The Government would then be able to allocate Virginia tobacco to thfi smaller companies which have run short. Thus, British soldiers and civilians will soon be smoking only blended Greek, Turkish and Virginia tobacco. It is expected that the coming Budget will increase the tobacco duty by 4s to 17s Gd a lb,, and the consumer will then pay Is Gd instead of Is o%d for 20 cigarettes.
