HEARTS OF OAK
WOODEN SHIP BUILT MINESWEEPER FOR BRITAIN "Hearts of oak are our ships . . ." still has some truth in modern naval craft, for lI.M. Motor Minesweeper 1 has a wooden hull. This vessel is the first of a ne\V type of small minesweeper, designed for clearing harbour entrances and coastal waters of enemy mines. She was constructed by Thornythe well-known destroyer builders in 1937. Although her hull, being of wood, is reminiscent of warships of Nelson's time, the analogy ends there, for she has three 12-cylinder petrol engines developing a total horsepower of 1500 and giving a speed of 15 knots. Three shafts drive the propellers through oil-operated rcverse-reduc-tEon gears of the "modern wheeldrive" type. The displacement of this useful little ♦'Heart of Oak" is only 32 tons, and her total complement is 11 officers and men.
