RACING NOTES

A NON-TOTALISATOR MEETING The Ngaruawnhia Racing Club has been granted permission by the Waikato Club to race at Te Rapa on Saturday, June Bth. This meeting should act as a solution to those whom the Ellerslic totalisator was not extremely kind, for the legalised machine will not be in evidence on the occasion. INCREASED PRIZE MONEY The Auckland Racing Club, Avhich still maintains its progressive policy, has decided to increase the prize money for the Great Northern Steeplechase by £250, the stake Avill now be £2000. GETTING READY That very capable, and successful New Plymouth sprinter, Majority, is reported to be improving rapidly. SALE OF LORD CAVENDISH i Lord Cavendish has been sold by Mr G. F. Moore of Wanganui, to Messrs J. Vestey and R. S. Bremer, of Waverley. A SALE BARGAIN The Defoe gelding,, Sigurd, who won the two hurdle races at Whan-* garci, was secured a year ago by Mr C. Ericson, of Dargaville, at the clearing sale in Wellington of the late Mr AY. Higgins' thoroughbreds for the nominal sum of 45' guineas. Judging by his recent performances he must rank as a sale bargain. TOO HIGHLY ASSESSED The Auckland owned Round Up who throughout the present season has been racing around Sydney, has been turned out for a spell. The opinion of Australian writers is to the effect that the handicappers have been too severe with their allotments for the Lord Qucx gelding. If this be so it is not in the interests of Australian racing, as any successes by Round Up may have paved the way for Mr T. Impcy to send to "the other side" horses of the calibre of Orclio and Arvakur. MATAMATA HORSES Matamata is now the second largest training centre in the province outside the metropolitan area, for there are over 50 horses in work there. The number will be increased before the end of the month by the addition of the team presided over by Fred Davis.
