NEW CEMETERY
CONSULTATION BETWEEN COUNTY AND BOROUGH SITE TO BE DETERMINED . The Financc Committee reported to the County Council on Tuesday that the Works Committee of the Whakatane Borough . Council had waited on it to deal with the question of a new cemetery. The present Borough Cemetery had been estimated to last another live years, and, having regard to the necessary time which must elapse lie fore a new area could be purchased and made available, it was necessary now that consideration lie given to the acquisition of a new site. The burials statistics indicated that the present Borough. Cemetery was used more for County burials than for Borough burials.? The proposal was for the establishment of a joint cemetery and the deputation desired the Council to give consideration to such a proposal. In answer to a question, His Wor.shij) the Mayor had stated that the Borough Council considered that the County Council should pay more than 50 per cent of the cost. In the establishment of a new cemetery the chief difficulty which arose was that of a suitable site and it was thought that a minimum area of about 12 acres was Suitable sites were scarce and it was thought that the County Council, with its intimate knowledge of the County, would be able to give great assistance here. After some discussion on sites, a committee was formed to confer with the Borough committee and report back to the Council.
