REPRESENTATION
PROVINCIAL PATRIOTIC COUNCIL DISCUSSION ON QUESTION At the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Whakatane County Council, the acting County Chair man, Mr J. L. Burnett,, reported on the public meeting held on April 12, at which instructive addresses had been delivered by Mr Goldstine, Deputy Chairman of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council, Mr Hacken, National Patriotic Fund Seeretan r , Mr Usmar, Provincial Sec retary and Mr Ely a member of the Council. Mr Burnett said further that Mr Goldstine had intimated that he would recommend Whakatane's representation on the Provincial Coun cil. It was essential, therefore, that the County organisation for patriotic purposes should be established without delay. The reason for making this doubly necessary was an intimation by the Provincial Secretary to the effect thati the Auckland Provincial Chest be given the respon sibility of financing the re-habilita-tion of the men of the Auckland Province. Meeting at an Early Date. The Chairman stated that he would be calling a meeting at anj early date and it was essential that all the districts in the County be represented ns district representatives would be the personnel of tihe Whakatane Patriotic Local Council,. In discussing the question, Cr Gawte said that Whakatane definitely should have some representation on the Provincial Council. Another aspect was given consideration when Cr Smith said that if the Patriotic Council was to concern itself with the re-habilitation of the troops when they returned there should be men on the committees. At the present time it seemed as though it was to be purely a women's organisation. Difficulties encountered after the conclusion of the Great War were stated by Cr Cawte and he said when it was possible to obtain representation at Auckland those difficulties had usually vanished. That would apply in this instance if Whakatane had a representative on the Provincial Council. Mr Burnett said that the representatives selected by the variousdistricts would have to attend the meeting he was calling shortly with all authority to act. Districts and Societies. The Councillors were allotted districts, their own ridings with alterations in some cases, and they are to call together the societiesand institutions with, a view to electing one representative.
