FIRST ANNIVERSARY
TO-DAY marks the first anniversary of the BEACON. Exs&tly one year ago the first issue which heralded the triweekly news service was published and eagerly welcomed by realders following a period of nearly three months when the town was without a local newspaper at all. It has been the endeavour of the paper during the past twelve months to be of definite service to the town and the country districts through which it circulates. Keenly interested in all phases of local activities the paper has sought to portray the district community, by reflecting in its columns all that takes place in the varied spheres of social, economic and productive life. Its usefulness in giving a lead has been endorsed by the success which has crowned its efforts in bringing before the people a dozen useful suggestions. It has also been the objective of the paper to willingly co-operate with all deserving organisations and to be actively associated with them in furthering the interests of sport, social •intercourse or voluntary services for the common good.. The support which has .been accorded the efforts majde in the above directions is extremely gratifying _ and the directorate and management desire to express in return their appreciation and acknowledgment of the very fine response from the advertising business section and from the reading public which forms the bulk of the subscribers. By their continued loyalty and co-operation great things are possible,, and we are confident that the future will bring further expansion and goodwill. By way of intensifying the interest of our clients and readers it the intention in the near future to extend* a general invitation to visitors to inspect the printing works and see for themselves the various processes which are necessary the complete paper is ready for delivery. On that occasion members of the staff will be ready to explain the procedure from the setting of news 011 the linotype, to the final presswork and folding. The 'jobbing' section will also be open for inspection, and; the handwork and compositing necessary in the production of general printing, explained in detail. The whole idea of a 'visitors day' is merely a slight gesture in return for the goodwill extended* to the company in the past and it is hoped that it will be accepted by readers, advertisers anc\ others in the spirit m which the invitation is extended.
