RACING NOTES
RIGHT ROYAL SOLD The gelding "flight Royal, formerly owned and trained by 1. lucker, has been purchased by M. O'Connor, who has a useful team of jumpers in work, including Baldric, All Irish and Te Ronga. Right Royal seemed to be feeling the effects of the hard going when he raced in the autumn and failed to display his true form. However, he is capable of very creditable performances both on the flat and over fences, and maj r be seen to greater advantage at the winter meetings. WAIKATO MEETING Good stakes are offered for the Waikato Racing Club's Winter Meet ing, which takes place at Te Rapa on May 18 and 20. Principal races on the first day are the Te Rapa Steeplechase of £750; President's Handicap of £500; and the Waikato Hurdles of £400. The Hamilton Hurdles and Waikato Steeplechase, run the second day, each carry £500 and the Te Rapa Handicap, the chief llat event, is worth £400. SUCCESS AT LAST Master Solway, who entered the list of winners in the' Trial Stakes at Nelson, is by the Magpie horse, Black Ronald, from Missmaid, a prolific mare, and dam also of Spearmiss and Cape Gabo.< Master Sol' way is a four year old and tooli a long time to show any form.
RACEHORSE DESTROYED While galloping.'at Takanini 6,n Thursday morning, Phileourt, the four year old colt owned by Mr G. Courtney and trained by A. Tinker, broke a fetlock joint and had to ibe destroyed. FIRST WIN BEYOND A MILE Although Ivathbella had been placed in the Herries Memorial Cup, of 11 furlongs, at T'e Aroha, she had not won a handicap beyond a mile until she succeeded in the Hastings Handicap at the Hawke's Bay meeting. She is by Beau Pere from Royal Line, a half-sister to Curie, and is the best-performed member of this well-known Hawke's Bay family lor many years* THREE WINS TO "THE RAKER" In winning two races at Oamaxu The Raker confirmed the promise he had shown at Dunedin, In four months of racing he has won three times,, and been second on another occasion. By Croupier from RippiLee, by Arausio from Snotvshoe, by Kilbroney, he is related to Arctic King, Cold Steel, Irritation. Rabbi and other noted performeii. and he is developing like a slavei. THE TOP $RICE I The Beau Pere colt purchased by Mr Alan Cooper, at the Sydney Easter sales, for 3500 guineas, is very highly thought of by his new owner, who had carefully watched his progress from l'oalhood. His dam. Boneta, is an imported French-bred mare descending from the same family as Buchan, Craig-on-Eran, Saltash, and Ormonde. Evidently Mr Cooper intends to purchase only the best, irrespective of the price. THE NECESSARY PADDOCKS ♦ The well known trainer, Davis, now at Ellerslie, has decided to transfer his racing team to Matamata, and the change will take place in the near future. In some quarters interest is being evinced in respect to why a location, about 120 i miles from Ellerslie, should have been chosen, especially for a high grade team. But the information has now been made public, and it is to the effect that near Auckland and even at Pukekohe Davis failed 1 to make arrangements for the necessary paddock accommodation, and selected the Matamata property recently vacated by A. McGregor, who is now at Te Rapa.
RECENT SALE The Karnmu Stud recently sold the yearling filly by Pink Coat from Pacify, by Limond from Makepeace, to Mr H. Gibson, Eltham. Mr Gibson formerly raced Notium, who is by Lysander from Makepeace, and who won the Taranaki Stakes and other races before being sold to Mr J. F. Kelly. STILL ON DECK ' I The evergreen Curie, still owned by W. McKinnoiij is getting through a strong preparation at Hawke's Bay in view of the Great Northern Hurdles. This particular province is likely to have a pretty strong hand for leading jumping events for it also has Padishah, Charade and Peter Becki'ord in active commission. CONSISTENT SUPPORTERS Among the oldest racing supporters in New Zealand are the Douglas family of Hawke's Bay, for members thereof have been racing for over 80 years. The Ring, winner of this year"s Hawke's Bay Cup is owned by Deny Douglas, a grand-son of the late William Douglas, who established the present stud. Nurse lost 401bs fat in 6 weeks. Try Bonkora.
