HEADMASTER'S REVIEW
THE SCHOOL. YEAR MR C. C. SOUTHEY'S REPORT Reporting to the meeting of house holders last Wednesday evening the Headmaster of the Whakatane school stated as u.^der: On the scholastic side the work has been most successful,, the Inspectors' reports showing that a high standard of work has been attained in both departments. The examination of Certificates of Proficiency which used to be held at i the termination of the primary course has been abolished. To those | who have completed a satisfactory year's work in Form II a. Primary School Certificate is issued. Similarly, the Senior Free Place has disappeared. Good results have been obtained in the University Entrance Examination and the School Certificate these being taken at the end of the Secondary Course. To those who continue for a further year after passing these examinations Higher Leaving Certificates have been awarded.
During the past two years a great advance has been made in the Commercial Course, now taken by Mrs Pearse. Sound instruction is being imparted and the appreciation of the parents is shown by the large number of pupils enrolled. There is great need for more typewriters and for a room set. apart for commercial work. Fine results have been produced by the Technical branch where Woodwork and Cookery are taught. At present an attempt is being made to re-establish evening classes in Technical and Commercial subjects and it is hoped that public support will be forthcoming.
