ONE MONTH'S GAOL
CRUELTY TO ANIMALS MAORI PLEADS GUILTY Taare Uatuku, farmer, of Ruatoki,, appeared before Messrs Moody and Hayward, Justices of the Peace, at Taneatua on two charges of cruelty to animals. He pleaded guilty. Constable O. S Rice prosecuted and detailed the circumstances of the case. In a statement accused had said that he saw several stray horses in his paddock. He was very annoyed at them being there as they had been in the previous day aiidhe had had to chase them out. Accused stated that he got his gvro and shot at two of the horses. He hit both. His only reason for shoots ing at the animals was because they . were on his property and he was angry. One horse was hit in the stomaclii with shot-gun pellets and the other was struck on the rump. " Accused was to one v month's imprisonment in the Wha- T katane Police Gaol on one charge and convicted and discharged on the other.
