SOLDIERING IN EGYPT
Sir*—Friends of local members of the Divisional Cavalry may be in,terested to know that all have stood the long sea journey quite well. Whakatane County is represented in the Regiment by Dixie Dean and Des Fogarty, motor cyclists, Roy Stokes, Ted Backhousc and Roland Crapp* No. 2 Squadron, and A. Burt, No. 1 Squadron. I met Rob Thompson and Jim Buddie in Perth. Rob is quite fat! and I believe Jim has put on a pound or two. I have seen nothing of Fay Waugh or Jack Stewart,, but from reports they are both doing fine* As I write Ave lie at anchor off: Suez and expect to disembark to-» morrow. Our Colonel is on his second visit here, having been a member of the Main Body, .1914-18. He is extremely popular and, I should say, capable, so friends and relations may rest assured that every-# thing possible will be done for the safety, comfort and welfare of the Whakatane members of the 2nd NrZ. Regiment. Each member sends his regards , and Kia Ora. Yours etc., 1294, Tpr. F. A. BURT. Major Prideaux just came ahoard to pay us. He looks very fit. Suez, 13/2/40.
