DISTURBANCE CAUSED

JFIRE SIREN AT KOPEOPEO AFFECT AT THE HOSPITAL At the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday a letter was re--ceived from the Medical ■ Superintendent asking the Board to take up with the Whakatane Fire Board the matter of the fire siren at Kopeopeo. .Dr Dawson pointed out that on a recent night the siren sounded for • some time and caused every patient in the hospital to awaken. The disturbance was not in the best interests of the patients. Dr Dawson suggested that perhaps the telephone system of alarm could be used at night, while that at present in use could be employed during the day. The Medical Superintendent advised that he was waiting on the Fire "Board. Mr Buddie moved that the Board -support the Medical Superintendent "in his protest. Mr Schofield: I am a member of "the Fire Board, which has not yet •considered the matter. It isn't for the Hospital Board to tell them what to do. Mr McGougan: We are representing the citizens in the hospital. Mr Schofield: I am speaking as a "member of the Fire Board. Mr McGougan: This isn't a meeting of the Fire Board. Member's Contentions. Mr Schofield said that a member 'of the Hospital Board should wait on the Fire Board and that in any •case the matter should be conducted properly and a statement in writing submitted to the latter body. The Fire Board had not been given time to consider the matter. When that body met the treble would be investigated and dealt with accordingly. Mr Schofield added his ■opinion that the Medical Superintendent had a right to wait on the Fire Board as a citizen but not in his official capacity. Finally it was resolved that a letter be sent drawing the Fire Board's to the matter and authorising the Medical Superintendent to supply any information.
